Chipata
General Information
Chipata, formerly known as Fort Jameson, is the capital town of the Eastern Province of Zambia. It is located in the Eastern parts of the country and has a total population of about 100 000 residents. This town serves as the business and administrative centre of the province and even has a “welcome arch” for visitors.
The town was originally named after the 19th century politician and adventurer Leander Starr Jameson. The majority of Chipata’s residents speak the Nyanja and English languages and also has a large number of Indian-speaking inhabitants.
