Kabwe
General Information
Kabwe, formerly known as Broken Hill, is the capital town of the Central Province of Zambia. It is located in the centre of the country and has a total population of approximately 203 000 residents. The name Kabwe means “ore” or “smelting” which is derived from the nearby copper mines. European and Australian prospectors named the town Broken Hill after a similar mine in Australia.
This town was founded in 1902 when lead and zinc deposits were found in the area which led to the area becoming an important mining centre. In 1921 mine excavators found a human skull in these mines and called it Broken Hill Man, also known as Rhodesian Man.
