Mufulira
General Information
Mufulira is in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. Mufulira which means "Place of Abundance" has a population of around 143,930 as at the 2000 Census. The town developed around the Mufulira Copper Mine in the 1930's.
Zambia's third President (2002–2008), Levy Mwanawasa, was born in Mufulira, as well as top African footballer, Kalusha Bwalya.
Mufulira is only 16km from the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is the start of the Congo Pedicle road, which connects the Copperbelt to the Luapula Province. A tarred highway to the south-west connects Mufulira to Kitwe and Chingola, and another to the south-east connects to Ndola, which is the commercial and transport centre of the Copperbelt. A division of Zambia Railways, carrying freight only, serves the mine.
The Mufulira Mine is owned and operated by Mopani Copper Mines which employs around 10,000 permanent workers. It produced about 300,000 tonnes of copper bars in 2007 after the restoration of the Mufulira copper smelter by SMEC South Africa. Production and employment levels are however, down from the 1969 peak when the Copperbelt made Zambia the world's 4th largest copper producer.
