General Information

Mwinilunga is a town in the North-Western Province of Zambia.  It lies on the West Lunga River, not far from the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola.

The 2000 Zambian Census showed a population of 117,505.  The Chilunda-speaking Kanongesha-Lunda people are the largest ethnic group living in this district.

The source of The Zambezi is located here, near to the community of Kalene Hill, before flowing southwestward into Angola.  Mwinilunga is one of the wettest places in Zambia with an annual rainfall of about 1400mm falling.  There is also a small airport located here.

Mwinilungu would have benefited from trade with Angola and the DR Congo, but wars, bad road conditions and various trade policies between the countries have so far prevented anything from developing.

Forest Fruits Ltd. has been operating in Mwinilunga since 1997 and has successfully been working with over 5000 beekeepers in the region to export organic honey to the European market.

There is an annual ceremony, Chisemwa cha Lunda, which is held by Senior Chief Kanongesha of the Lunda and draws crowds to the district every September.

Zengamina is a small hydroelectric power generation plant near Kalene Hill in Mwinilunga.  It was built between 2004 and 2008 at a cost of roughly $3 million.

There is a primary boarding school here, The Sakeji School, which overlooks the Sakeji River.  This river provides hydroelectric power and is leisurely used by the children.  A water wheel on the Sakeji River powers a generator that charges battery cells at the school, providing power for lighting.
