Siavonga
General Information
Siavonga is in the Southern Province of Zambia. It is the main town along the Zambian side of Lake Kariba. Just a few kilometres from the extraordinary Kariba Dam.
When comparing it to the Zimbabwe shore of Lake Kariba, the Zambian side is comparatively undeveloped for tourists. Siavonga also caters towards the conferencing trade from Lusaka. It is becoming known as the "Riviera of Zambia" earning its reputation from the amount of affluent Zambians investing in holiday homes in this area.
Unfortunately, much of the ‘big game’ on the Zambian side of the lake has disappeared, so animals will not be on the "to see" agenda here, however, the lake is host to a wide variety of fish species including the Zambezi Tiger fish. Other species are Tilapia and Nembwe, as well as the enormous Vundu and Barbel. The area is extremely rich in birdlife that live off the food found in such a wide stretch of water. Hippopotamus and the Nile crocodile are also often seen.
All main industries in Siavonga are tied to the lake. The business of Kapenta (a type of sardine) fishing is hugely important to this area, and is one of Zambia's staple food. There are many commercial Kapenta fishing companies in Siavonga. Commercial bream fishing and crocodile farming is also carried out on the lake.
Recently there has been Uranium discovered in the district and it promises to bring new wealth in creating work in Siavonga.
