Solwezi
General Information
Solwezi is the capital of the North-Western Province of Zambia. Solwezi has a population of around 65,000 and is at an elevation of 1235m above sea level.
Kaonde is the largest tribe in Solwezi, but you can also find large numbers of Lunda and Luvale speaking people.
The main industry here is copper mining at Kansanshi Mine (about 10 km North) run by First Quantum Minerals, and Lumwana Mine (about 65 km West) run by Equinox Minerals. Uranium is also mined here.
Not far from the city centre you can find the "Kifubwa Rock Stream Shelter" which is located next to the Kifubwa River. There are inscriptions to be found there dating back to the Stone Age people.
Solwezi is not actually an attractive town or a tourist attraction in general, but it is a major centre. Many use it to get supplies if coming from Lusaka and heading west, or driving to Kafue National Park northern section. Solwezi is used at It is a good place to refuel if travelling further. There are branches of Zambia's main banks in the town centre, as well as a large Shoprite supermarket.
